I think Go92.5FM has gone full Hindi. Or at least, they've drastically cut back on English music. If you've not heard Go 92.5FM, or in case you don't care much for English music, don't read further.
I've been a big fan of Go 92.5FM right since it's Radio Mid-day days of the mid/late 90s, when private FM stations were first introduced in Bombay. Radio Mid-day was launched sometime then and was an instant hit. The urban, educated (college-going, yuppies, etc) Bombayite formed the core of their audience and does so even now. In those days MTV was still all-English, and there was no channel [V].
Anish Trivedi and Anu Singh hosted "The Sundown Show" then (6pm to 9pm). I loved this show as much for these two RJs as for the fact that they actually listened to their listeners - amply evident in the music they played. Then there were the contests and the free movie tickets, the merchandise, etc. Note that at that time, participating in contests meant dialing the station continously (remember no mobile phones to send SMS?) and waiting to get through. I remember tasting success a couple of times, and believe me there is a kick knowing that the city is listening to you! (or so I thought!)
Somewhere down the line, Anu Singh left and was replaced by a woman called Jak. Not the same, but still good enough. I still remember the way Anish and Jak would end their Friday show "ringing in the weekend" , with some kind of horn or loud instrument - indeed a pleasant reminder. With Anish Trivedi, the thing was, as it is with opiniated people, you either liked him or hated him. And his accent couldn't endear him to the masses anyways. I counted myself among his fans. Tarana came in much later and was a fresh, chirpy new voice.
Other RJs, that I can recall, on this station included, the owner Tariq Ansari (a.k.a. T-Man) and Shernaz Patel (a morning show). This was also the station that had Rahul Bose reading out passages from cult classics like "The Catcher in the Rye" on Sunday morning. Yes, this has happened. Then there was Parag Trivedi with his show de-mystifying Western Classical music. I'm pretty sure that no other radio station at that point of time had such depth of programming, at least on the English music side.
Somewhere around 1998-99, private FM stations vanished and came back a couple of years later in 2001 or 2002. And Radio Mid-day was now called Go 92.5. This time Anish and Tarana hosted the "Good Morning Mumbai" show and Malini and Jaggu did "Horn OK Please" in the evening.
I was hooked on to it all over again. Same old, same old. Great RJs, great music. Good enough for you to ignore the ads. And this was also the ONLY radio station that played English songs - full time. There was also a station called Win 94.6. As my friend reminds me, this channel ran an ad which went "Win - which plays music like this
Eventually, Go also increased its Hindi content and got in Shruti to do an entire Hindi show from 11am to 1pm. Yet, English songs were still played often. Besides the morning and evening shows, afternoon fare also had a good sprinkling of English music. "College Radio" - an afternoon dial-in and requests show had enough college kids asking for James Blunt's "You're beautiful" dedicated to their crush as they had for Himesh-bhai's "Aashiq banaaya". They even had the husky-voiced Chris doing a 90's-specific music show on Sundays at 9pm. Hootie and the Blowfish, Crowded House, Hanson, Alannis Morrisette - what more could anyone ask for ?
And of course on week days, wind up the day with Glen's Nighshift. 3 hours of old English music, and what an enviable line-up - The Who, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, U2, Pearl Jam....God damn! he played some good music which packed a great punch to at least one set of people listening in at that time - i.e. 30-40yr old office-goers going back home post-9pm. 30-40yr olds who've rocked to "Laila", "Sultans of Swing". "Hotel California", "Brick in the Wall", etc. when they were young.
You know you've grown old when they start playing "With or without you", "Cats in the cradle" and "Jeremy" on a "Classics show", when you used to hear songs like "Her name is Rio", "Wake me up before you go-go" and "West End Girls" on the same show - not so long ago. Its funny how we relate time with the music we heard in those days.
So Go92.5FM still smoked competition on all counts - quality of music, quality of RJs, everything. You just have to listen to the shrilly, loud, accented RJs of the other stations to appreciate Go. I didn't even waste my time doing that comparison.
Cut to the present. Sometime last week, Tarana started to speak Hindi more than usual and I thought I was hearing a tad too many Hindi songs. And today, Sunday, 9th April, I woke up to "Chura liya hai tumne" instead of T-Man's Old English songs on his Sunday Brunch show. So I'm guessing Go has gone full Hindi.
There's also a conspiracy theory in my mind - have they sold out to Radio Mirchi ("leading" radio station, also full-Hindi), given that the Times of India (owners of Radio Mirchi) also has a stake in Mid-day?
So that's that. Go 92.5FM is now a full Hindi music channel. Why am I making such a big song and dance about this? Simply because, like many others, I'd like to have regular access to English songs - contemporary, classic, whatever. It does matter, right ? Even Star TV relaunched Star World, after pulling the plug on it. Even a Zee has a Zee Cafe. Even MTV has a VH-1 for English music. Both MTV and [V] play English songs once in a while.
In fact, even the state-run AIR (107.1FM) plays English songs. Funny..I didn't think that they'd come to my rescue when I was going back home and wanted to be soothed by Steve Winwood and not Annu Maalik, Bappida or Sonu Nigam.
PS - If only Worldspace had car audio. Yet, I just hope they don't fold up.

Absolutely bang on! What Go marketing dept is thinking is this: Even if the 'songs are the same' people will tune in for Jaggu and Tarana. Which is true (we have no choice) but they really should not dilute the equity of the station to make it more and more like Mirchi. One day people like you and me will stop tuning in.
Another issue is that the SAME ads often repeat about 20 times in one hour. eg the new Scorpio and Hindustan Times are two such examples. It's like being punished for being loyal to one station!
By the way you an I are about the same age and seem to have heard similar kind of music in 'our days'. But there are not enough of us to get our kind of radio station in Mumbai city...
Great post - while I don't buy the conspiracy theory (as a matter of fact, Indian Express has subsequently taken a stake in Mid-day in a move which was seen as acting as a "white knight" against B&C, so I doubt if TOI can be blamed for this). I think its really a reflection of the "commercial reality" that people like you, Rashmi, UI and every one where I work are a miniscule minority - and the mass market is completely Hindi dominated. Though frankly, imho Jaggu and Tarana attempts at forcing more Hindi in seem quite strained and unnatural - and will get people like me to turn to AIR (at least on days when Vinod Advani is doing his stuff). But best of luck to Go - in its attempts to "Out Mirchi" Mirchi. and "Au Revoir", till they fail in that attempt.
Have never been to their web-site - wonder if it is worth leaving a crib there?
@ rashmi - hey, thanks for coming over. Oh, I totally agree with you on the ads - besides being repititive, they're pathetic. I could write a post just on that, but I'd be too angry to do it.
Indeed - it looks like we are being punished for being loyal to them. The whole thing makes me so damn angry.
There might be too few of us to set up a radio station, but perhaps (ideally?) it would be great if we could run a blogroll, raise some halla and at least let them know that they have pissed off their loyal fans.
@ UI - dude, touche. Unfortunately we do seem to form a minority, bcos Hindi rocks and so does Himesh (have you even heard the kinda airtime he's getting on Go?!) Best of luck to them. And yes, the entire lot of RJs sound totally forced and unnatural. The conspiracy theory was just a random thot coming more from my frustration than anything else, and I doubt that its true.
I also doubt there's any point cribbing on their website. In any case we're in a minority and I did the only thing I could - i.e. put out my feelings here, in my own space. Like I said above, ideally it would be great to raise a ruckus in the blogosphere for whatever it's worth, so that they know that they've pissed us off.
Hey - thanks for coming over here to my blog.
I completely agree. If there was anything which made the long ride to office worth it, it was jaggu and tarana in their original version.
Just a random thought which occurs to me is that most channels on radio/ tv go the vernacular way, while newspapers don't. Whoever has ever heard of Mid-Day or even Tabloid changing over to Hindi content?
@ DK2 - hey, thanks for dropping here and on Mumbai Matters.
Well, I'd think because listening to Hindi music is one thing, but reading a Hindi newspaper another (and tougher?).
gr8 post... shame on Go fm... i'll link it to my blog.
Well, licensing fees for FM stations was so high that you need to cater to the masses to break even, forget make profit. But with the new FM radio policy, expect more niche stations. Why just english music, there may even be separate stations for jazz, country, brit rock, heavy metal etc.
@ Vaibhav - thanks dude
@ Gaurav - that sounds like music to my ears ! Thanks.
Shift to bangalore. More non-bollywoodmusic on the radio here. Unfortunately, Mirchi just reached here too, but let's hope that some manina maga (son of the soil) will burn their station down for playing northie stuff.
Its great to know that there is a bigger community out there listening to "GO". The commute to office and back is not the same these days. The old GO (my GO) turly used to lift the spirits and made me ready to take on the rigours of the day. Have been missing the cocktail of Jaggu and Tarana's stupid banter and 'our' kind of songs. The songs along with Jaggu and Tarana does not sound the same any more. Even the discussions are no longer 'interestingly stupid'. One more thing which distrubs me are the longer ad breaks..obviously adding to the bottom line of GO. I think its time to get the CDs dusted....or....can we, the loyal listeners pool in money and start a (Co-op)radio station and get people like Anish Trivedi, T man,J & T.....
@ Anon - sorry yaar, shifting to Bangalore is not an option for me :(
Liked that term "maninga maga" !! and burning radio mirchi's station down ? Radical man ! Thanks !
@ Ratish - Thanks for the comment. I wish it was that simple to set up a radio station, and in any case it's not a very profitable business as Go is figuring out. Yet, if there's any such effort, I will def support it ! As I've said above, the least we could do is raise a halla. Thankfully someone even started an online petition. While the end-result is probably a foregone conclusion (i.e. Go will not change), at least, we, the listeners raised our voice.
As Gaurav said above, the new licenses could result in new stations with our kind of music. By then, it will obviously be too late for Go to get back the listeners they lost.
Bombay Addict ,
If you want ur staple of English/International Music , Tune in to 107.1. Yes the AIR FM station. Everyday Morning from 8 to 10 they play some good tracks. The flip side of listening , is you have to put up with some tiresome RJ's.
Yes A real pity GO fm has gone desi. But I think as MidDay have won some new licences, they may want to start an all english radio station.
Cant agree with you more. Posted about the same at My Blog.
I cannot listen to GO now. Even if they have a good Rahman song playing, I continue switching thru channels.
@ Anon - hey thanks a million for that tip. Indeed I was pleasantly surprised to hear good English music in the morning and I don't mind putting up with any kind of RJs as long as the music is good. Yes, I'm hoping for new English channels..... from anyone !
@ Aditya - very nice post, loved the Radio ga-ga bit !. I can understand your predicament...and after reading your post, I'm convinced this is also an emotional issue. Thanks for dropping by.
Dude couldn't hv agreed more!!
well like some1 mentioned b4 107.1 fm isnt that bad xcept da rjs ... but dis 1 particular rj called deepak is prety gud ... weekday nights ... i think 10 to 12 ... try it
@ Anon - hey thanks for dropping by. I've already switched over to 107.1 and will def check out the 10-12 slot. Thanks dude.
hey all the main reason i suppose for the change of go to full time hindi is because Mid-day and BBC are coming up with a full time english channel. Though this thing is still not comfirmed but i hope it is true. One cannot be happy with 2 to 3 hours of english music a day that to at odd times
Hey...I was just surfin around and happen to bump into this blog. I work for a radio station.. and as many of you have rightly guessed..the change in Go's format is nothin but a pure commercial gamble. they are makin much less than mirchi or city as far as revenues are concerned...and with heavy funding from the BBC.. the pressure to make money is huge. This might work. It might not. And if it doesnt..they probably might shift back to their old format like Radiocity in bangalore did. RC in Bangalore started with 24 hours english...moved to total bollywood..and then hindi serials..and now back to a mix of hindi english and kannada. Its all about experimenting with the format till they get it right! As for the argument that new stations will come in with niche formats and GO will lose out.....trust me it wont. U cant go niche and make money unless u own two stations in the same city. One goes mass(hindi)which makes the money and the other goes niche (english) so that u provide 360 degree coverage for potential advertisers. Unfortunately the present govt rules dont allow for a station to own two channels in the same city..so u have to wait for a while for that. And dont kid ureself thinkin ure gonna get a jazz or a rap station soon. That would probably NEVER happen. Mainstream English music is niche in india. No way ure gonna get a niche within a niche! U need Jazz or Heavy metal? Get worldspace! Satellite radio is your only hope coz they make their money thru subcription and they aint as number driven as FM stations who need to show huge numbers to rope in advertisers!
Gosh thats really sad to hear. I was hooked onto G0 92.5 through the 2 years I lived in Mumbai. I was there just last week but i dint have time to tune in. Now I'm glad i didnt, I would have been very dissapointed..
I think what the owners of Go 92.5 fm needs to know one thing that qulity is very much needed than quantity and you guys have pissed us off ,by changing it into a all hindhi station. Its like any other low quality station now .
i think the owner of go 92.5 fm is a bit out of his mind , maybe mentally gone mad. Otherwise who would change format from a english music station to bull shit bollywood crap, all day long, huh?
the owner is very selfish, n cruel as well.
Thanks Ashveen, all the Anons above and Nicotine Addict.
Do read Rashmi Bansal's interview with Shariq Patel of Go 92.5 (now of course called One) which is pretty much the final word on this issue.
thumps up bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers mate
Yo my hommies...ur all r absolutley correct..these motherfuckers don't respect the upper audience...I'm an ex-fan of radio mid-day & Go 92.5 FM...i really do not understand that why the fuck these guys can not play good english music for atleast an hour or two in a day...With all due respect to HINDI shit...i wanna listen english music....I wanna send SHIT chocolate to the Mktg head...of go 92.5 FM...Peace & Harmony....
congratulations -- go 92.5 is now radio one - the station for himesh devotees and for people mentally retarded people who think himesh and the other bollywood crap of today is the best music available in the whole planet earth. In association with shariq 'dingbat-meathead' patel
Let us be warned....today the culture is HINDI. Hindi culture implies 'Crowds going hysterical on playing Indipop in top clubs', 'crowds playing party poopers on English songs in top clubs', and lines that go 'Arre ay, kya karrrela hai re', which sound defeating when mouthed by yuppy looking youngsters. Worldspace and VH1 have really bailed us out....but I wonder for how long. Guess its only time before THEY need a bailout.
mr. aero, 4 yr kind information, vh1 was, is and will truly remain an international channel, u like it or not.
Randomly pulled out an ancient post to comment on, simply becaue it speaks about a time in my life when Go was very, VERY dear to my heart. Conspicuous by absence on your list of Go's achievements was Radio X (RJ Genesia), which happened to be my daily (well week-day) fix of "stuff-you'd-never-heard-of-and-couldn't-afford-to-buy-from-abroad-and-didn't-have-broadband-to-download". As a matter of fact, some of us Radio X regulars had sent in major major rants to Go FM when they shut down the show. Not that it helped.
What pisses most of us off is probably not the absolute domination of Hindi music on the radio (Hell that's to be expected, given the general demographics of music listeners in this country, and no slur on them, too), but the fact that we "elite" (sorry I know that sounds like a bad word but it is also the truth in some ways) listeners can't even get a decent 1-2 hour slot in a day, or even once a week! Surely the station's commercial aspirations can't be all that hurt by playing English/rock/alternative music from, say 10 - 12 on weeknights (which, incidentally, used to be Radio X's slot). I mean ONE FREAKING HOUR in the age of 24-hr radio! Why the Hell not??
*Sigh* I wish I knew how to set up a Pirate radio station. My personal music collection would suffice for a few years of airplay :-)
Sughosh - I hear you brother. Your comment's gotta be one of the most heart-felt ones I've got on my blog.
I never heard Genesia, but I know for a fact that her show was a cult favorite.
And believe you me, there is utter joy in discovering new music. There's a big post here and I wish I could take out the time to write it. Thanks so much for the visit and the comment!
PS - Thank God for Worldspace and how I wish I could hear them on a portable or something!
Thanks for the response, Addict. Yes, the joy of discovering new music has been with me for years now... the thrill of hearing artiste like Love, Fairport Convention, XTC, Nick Drake... and ever so many others can never quite fade.
I've had Worldspace for over a year now, but somehow I find it no more than a mild palliative. Their "classic rock" channel only plays a predictable loop of "safe" tracks and the "alternative" channel (Bob) is mostly just noise. It's practically manna from Heaven simply for having more than one English channel, but honestly, nothing on WS grabs me anywhere near as much as the best of Go did
Sughosh - dude, do you blog? I'd love to read your stuff on music, if only to discover new stuff!.
Thanks to time constraints, I've not been able to keep myself updated on new music and hence am more than happy with Worldspace...it is indeed manna from the skies above!
But - and I agree with you - even their best efforts wouldn't come close to Go in its hey-days..now if only those !~@#$% jokers at Go were listening to us!!
I haven't quite managed to garner the patience and dedication to get into blogging regularly, but I did work in music journalism for a while around seven years ago. There's a few of my reviews at http://hypnos-reviews.tripod.com/ (though you'll have to wade through a LOT of underground/extreme metal reviews to find them :D)
Sughosh - Please let me know if you do start blogging, would be great to read your stuff. And "music journalism"? as in you can actually get paid for what you do? Wow!
Heh... music journalism... well it was a long long time ago, and I was still this enthusiastic idealistic lad just out of (engineering) college, artfully dodging the gazes of disbelief and disdain from my oh-so-Tam-Brahm family and their assorted "when-will-you-get-a-real-job?" friends. Worked for about 6 months for AVMax, after which the pockets began a slow, continuous moan which got to me rather quickly. :)
Anyways, further rambling should be directed elsewhere I guess... get in touch at sughosh@gmail.com
i agree totaly ...this guy is dosent know what hez tokin bout go 92.5 waz the best thing that ever happend to mumbai nd now welll its screwed but wht do i saw these guys came up with the most insane shit like the t man nd who rembers anish trivedi in the morning tht guy wazz amazing go help thse guys who shut down g0 man .... nd also the time when bbay wazz under hell from the floods thses guyss were sitting inthe hole day helping us out man .... dam i miss these guyss ... .....
Hey there,
Just chanced upon your blog when Googling Mumbai FM channels. Yeah I know about the Gone Go. You might want to read this which is based also on the same topic.
-Ram.
Hi! Radio One Fm 94.3 (Formerly Go 92.5FM) plays ONLY English music now 9pm onwards! Tune in :) xox Malini
P.S. I need your support!
Malini - didn't know you blog, but you were certainly one of my most fav. RJs! Well, I will certainly listen to it whenever I can and will also post on it! Thanks for dropping by!
BA
Read all whats on this blog. Was an ardent listener of GO and now Radio One....English...which came in and vanished like a streak of lightening. This going ...all Bollywood has realy put me off. If u ask me....u run up and down the FM dial and its all Bollywood. What happens to the mass who are for Western music? Is there no hope for a change? The Indian public listens to Bollywood..ok..but even abroad in countries like South America, Portugal...and many more have different frequencies of English as well as their local language music. In fact the English will have a variety, of classics, jazz, pop, rock and even Classical Western music. Why not we????? TMan ofcourse was charming and would not let u leave the radio's side ..come what may. Jaggu and Tarana were just ideal to kick start your day. All gone....why do they even start this???
Hope they change their minds again..some day at least?
@The Author
Well I know i'm 4 years late in commenting but better late than never! Couldn't help but comment on this blogpost! Still miss what used to be my favorite show prior to 2006 - The NIGHT SHIFT with Glen!
I hate the fact that there's no english FM station in Mumbai apart from 107.1 FM Rainbow - they play an awesome lineup in the afternoons and late nights BUT their shows aren't well produced! Even Radio One 94.3 does play some english music over the weekends (hosted by Brian Tellis) but thats still not enough! After Go 92.5 (AKA Radio One 94.3) turned Hindi full time, things took a turn for the worst! Its about time someone comes up with a station which plays english FULL TIME! Went to Bengaluru recently and happened to tune into a station called Radio Indigo 91.9 which plays only ENGLISH all the time! We keep harping all the time on the fact that Mumbai's a cosmopolitan city, maximum city and shit like that BUT cmon we don't have a full time ENGLISH radio station! There are - to name a few communities - Parsis, Catholics and like u mentioned many college going yuppies who would love to listen to English Music! That's such a sad thing! Mumbai has a population of 16 million and there's no denying that a sizeable amount of that 16 million population would love to hear some awesome music playing on the airwaves! Maybe its the fact that Mumbai is the country's main economic nerve centre and everything or anything that runs here should be in conformity with either of the following:
1. It should be 'commercially viable' - guess thats the whole damn reason that most stations here have gone on to play Hindi or
2. It should not hurt the so-called 'sentiments' of the locals around - yeah you know those who have been brainwashed by regional propaganda of the powers-that-be who run parties based on the 'sons of the soil' agenda! Now if an english station tries to launch a station here, they might come up with their own terms and conditions such as playing Marathi music as well! Even Karnataka has its own regionalism-based parties but nothing seems to be a problem out there. Indigo's still running!
Hopefully Indigo will launch a station here. Even Worldspace's no more! Sigh!
English FM in Mumbai - R.I.P.
Such an old Post... but I still feel like commenting on it because I'm in such a nostalgic mood right now. This was 6 years ago when the station folded. I was 16 then. I had been a Go fan for 3 years and loved every minute of the radio station . They played music that I couldnt have hoped to hear otherwise because i did nto have access to the internet or a stereo at home. My radio was my life and I still remember the day i tuned into the night shift and was greeted by some old hindi song playing. I assumed it was another show and I should wait ,but then there was another and then another and then the host that started talking wasn't Glenn from the night shift. I havent heard his voice again. It was so frustrating when Go changed. As it changed completely without any indication whatsoever. just out of the blue ,one day the station i loved was gone. Havent touched the radio since. :'(
I use to listen to Glen everyday after coming from school, just in time for the dabba service. Dad had cut out the cable( a classic technique in Mumbai suburbs if your child is not studying ) and my only source of entertainment was Glen. From dabba service to night time old classics. Those were the days which made me appreciate English classics like never before. As you rightly said, we associate our age with the music of the period, but for me, it was the music from the past which is associated with my teen school days. Eyes almost become moist as old school memories flood back. I wish i could say thank you to Glen for all the awesome songs he played and the memories he helped create.
